If you have recently been diagnosed with a Morton’s neuroma, it’s not as scary as it sounds, nor as Dr Google makes it out to be.
What is a neuroma?
A neuroma is simply an irritation of the nerve between the bones in your foot, which causes it to become thickened and inflamed over time. You may feel some burning, sharp, or even tingling pains in the ball of your foot, or shooting down into the toes.
This can be especially frustrating if it prevents you from exercising, working, or even just getting around the house or shops comfortably.
Who is Morton?
He’s just the guy who named the problem a long time ago.
Will it get better?
Don’t worry, the outlook for you is good! You can get rid of your neuroma pain, provided you can figure out why it’s there in the first place!
What causes a Morton’s Neuroma?
The nerves in your foot become irritated due to excessive stress being put through that area over a period of time.
For example, you may favour one side of your body more during walking, due to a previous injury or a particular way of moving that you’ve developed. You may wear shoes that are too tight for you at the front, or with too high of a heel. These are some examples of things that can lead to more pressure through the front of the foot, and cause nerve irritation.
What can you do about a Morton’s Neuroma?
There are a number of options available to you, depending on your goals and what you feel like you need right now. There are some very temporary measures, such as padding underneath the foot, dry needling around the area, or even foot exercises to get the joints moving.
If you are experiencing recurrent pain, and want to reduce the risk of it coming back, you may prefer to consider more long-term interventions. These options include custom foot orthotics to take pressure off and change the movements that caused the problem and a strength and conditioning program to improve the function and strength of your body.
